Research Program B: For students who intend their Research Project to contribute to their Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER). Evidence of learning must be presented in written form to meet the common written assessment component.
Week 1 Journal
Chosen topic - The devlopment of gaming addiction
On Monday, I had my first ever lesson of Research Project, it wasn't too bad as I expected it to be because really, I never liked researching until Miss Woud explained the importances of Research Project which had me motivated. The reason why I had myself motivated was because I never knew that there was "Research Project A and Research Project B". Research B was the reason why I got motivated because I'm aiming for an ATAR score which would get myself into University. In the first lesson, Miss Woud handed us out some work papers that could help us with our research and the proposal that we're meant to finish. That work papers include "How to construct a Research Project, The Rubric, Research Journal Guide, Unpacking the Capabilities, and finally the Evidence of Learning Planner." I had a look at these work sheets and thought to myself "Wow, these would be beneficial for me" because sometimes when I research, I honestly have no clue on what I'm doing. In the second lesson of Research Project, Miss Woud gave us an invitation to Wikispaces so that we could have our own pages and keep a track of what we're doing. Also, one of the things I like about Wikispaces is the home page, the home page tells me the tasks that we're supposed to finish so that I don't forget what I'm supposed to do. During that time, we had a look at some examples of people's wikispaces. Some were very good and some were bad. I sat there setting out my plan for Research Project and asked for some help.

Week 2 Journal
Week two was pretty much as the same as the first week of school, but except we started our Research Proposal and had a look at few examples. I had trouble starting my own Proposal until I asked for some help. Also, I had a look at the Research Proposal guide. Those two things helped me finish my first paragraph of my research proposal. The topic that I have chosen to research about is "Gaming addiction", this topic has really interested me and I remember back in those primary school I was once a gaming addict and I really had fallen behind in school work until I understood the importances of education. During this week, all I did was planning out my proposal and my research topic. Planning out my proposal was harder than I expected it to be because really I'm not good at writing proposals.

Week 3 Journal
Week 3 was almost the same as the previous weeks, but except our Research Proposals were due on Monday. My proposal is about "Why does gaming addiction occur?" Also, on this week I have learnt about the "CRAP System for Referencing". CRAP stands for
Currency
Reliability
Authority
Purpose
On Tuesday's double lesson, I had a look at the online Resources. One of those resources are Ebscohost - on intranet page - excellent database of news for currency. On Friday I had a look at the Resource based learning (RBL) process which we're in the process of: D L S O P E
. That abbreviation stands for
D= Definine
L = Locate
S = Select
O = Organise
P = Present
E = Evaluate

Week 4 Journal
This week has been an outstanding week for me as I was able to access resources that we can use to locate information that is needed. Some of the websites are:
Ergo research skills - http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/ergo/research_skills
https://fuse.education.vic.gov.au/secondary/pages/Default.aspx
Finding information http://dclibrary.edu.glogster.com/finding-info/
National Library of Australia - many online resources - http://www.nla.gov.au/
Referencing Harvard style - http://www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/cite/harvard_dis/
Evaluating websites - http://library.acadiau.ca/tutorials/webevaluation/
Ethics and Research Adelaide Univeristy Video Research Ethics
On Our double lesson which was On Tuesday, we had to decide whether we would do Research Project A or B, I chose B because I want an ATAR score.

Week 5 Journal
Week 5 all of us had a look at what Ms Woud had posted on Wikispaces, which was about "annotating articles you have read". I have learnt that annotating means when you research you will need to make notes on your articles, to demonstrate you have read, summarised and analysed your work to produce key findings. Also during week 5 Ms Woud bought us some very nice folders so that we could put our work in it for the assessment. Those folders will help us alot as it has a lot of space for files to be stored in. During week 5 all we focused on was just preparing our talk with Ms Woud which I'm totally not ready for as I have other assignments to finish. but I will try to get it over and done with. Miss Woud had also gave us out the ethics form which I have not signed yet but I will get to that as soon as possible.

Week 6 Journal
We had no school on Monday and Tuesday because it was a public and a student free day. So I stayed home doing some homework. I had a look at some articles about gaming addiction on the internet. I have saved a few sites so that they would benefit throughout my research process. A site that has caught my attention was
http://www.axisresidentialtreatment.com/addiction-recovery/gaming/.
This site has information that would suit for me to research about.
On Thursday I did not attend to lesson as I arrived at school late due to family reasons. But on Friday we worked on our discussion which we're going to present to miss Woud.

Week 7 Journal
During week 7, I was working on my surveys and questions, then started doing my discussion.

Week 8 Journal
Continued on the discussion and found some websites about gaming addiction.

Week 9 Journal
Did 3/4 of my discussion and worked on my wikispaces.

Week 10
Finally finished my discussion and handed in on Monday, that week I did nothing but had a look at some sites for gaming addiction.

Research Proposal First Paragraph

The topic that I have chosen to research about in Research Project is “Why does gaming addiction occur?.” I personally have many reasons to why I chose to research this topic. One of the main reasons I decided to undertake this topic is because I myself, have fallen under this category of “gaming addiction” and I have experienced firsthand, the effects of spending too many hours in front of a computer screen. This research project will serve as a great reflection towards me, as I can explain and discuss what gaming addiction is really like in actual reality and the consequences that I have experienced because of it.
With the focus of my Research Project B (SACE) being “Gaming addiction”, I will be considering the following topics.
  • Defining what gaming addiction really is
  • Brainstorming on the reasons why students would consider gaming a higher priority over school.
  • The symptoms of gaming addiction..

Research Proposal - finished product

The topic that I have chosen to research about in Research Project is “Why does gaming addiction occur?” I personally have many reasons to why I chose to research this topic. One of the main reasons I decided to undertake this topic is because I myself, have fallen under this category of “gaming addiction” and I have experienced firsthand, the effects of spending too many hours in front of a computer screen. This research project will serve as a great reflection towards me, as I can explain and discuss why gaming addiction occurs from my point of view in and the consequences that I have experienced because of it. I have considered several topics, but watching my friends play games has given me a flashback of myself being a gaming addict and I thought this would be a great topic to research about. Another reason is because I wish to find out why gaming addiction occurs as it is a widely known issue that a lot of teenagers experience.

My preliminary research involved researching the topic of "Why does gaming addiction occur? This has given me an enhanced understanding of why I should research about this topic.

With the focus of my Research Project B (SACE) being “Why does gaming addiction occur?” I will be considering the following:

. Defining what gaming addiction really is.
. Brainstorming on the reasons why students would consider gaming a higher priority over school.
. The symptoms of gaming addiction.
. Violence
. Statistics
. Surveys
. Interviews
. Videos of gaming addict's

To begin with my research process, I will be planning to use secondary and primary sources, which is either from finding books in the school library, or on the internet. I also plan to use magazine articles as other secondary sources. For primary sources, I will be conducting interviews to people who once fell under the category of "Gaming addiction". I will also conduct surveys so that I can see people's point of view of "why does gaming addiction occur?" These sources will benefit my research project and will also help me to get a very clear insight of why gaming addiction occurs.

As I complete each day and night of researching and studying, I will be planning to complete a journal, showing my honest thoughts and reflections. By doing these journals, they will serve as great evidence of my research process.

When researching we must always respect ethics, I want to find out why gaming addiction occurs but in a safe way, I won't be able to conduct any experiments on people or conduct research that may implicate to someone being harmed. However through the use of Surveys, interviews and first hand questioning I will be able to talk to people and perhaps find out their personal experiences and retrieve primary information ethically and safely.
